I was born at home, on February 24, 1950, at 11:59 A.M. The attending
physician was Dr. Flowers. I was the second eldest of four children.
There were two boys and two girls.
My parents', Ruby Lee and Howard Adair Sr., were born during the early
1900's. Because they were not able to attend school beyond the eight grade
our parents encouraged us to complete high school. My brothers, and
sister, and I were able to attend college because of the example set by our
parents.
My younger sister had a baby at 16 years of age in 1969. I delayed my
plans and took over the responsibility of caring for my nephew, Tyrone, to allow
my sister to finish her education. In fact, it is because of the time that
I spent caring for Tryone, watching him grow and develop that sparked my interest
in becoming a teacher.
At the age of 23, I went back to school and obtained my G.E.D. Diploma within
3 months. In August 1973 I entered the University of Arkansas at Pine
Bluff. I graduated in May 1978 with a degree in Elementary Education
and obtained a position teaching kindergarten in the fall of 1978.
My nephew is now 32 years old, married, with six children. I am very
proud and blessed to have been a part of his life and now his children's lives.
My father died in 1987. My mother survives him. I am their only
remaining child. My parents adopted my nephew, Tyrone, then he was four
years old. I am very fortunate to have been able to help provide support
for my mother, my brothers and sister, and their families, while they were going
through terminal illnesses.
I have six nephews and nieces; and 18 great newphew and nieces. I dno
not measure success as most people do. I have had the great pleasure of
being able to help, and touch the lives of other people for Christ.
